Breeding of buckwheat

Breeding of buckwheat
(Fagopyrum esculentum L.)

Buckwheat is also the plant of weak soils; therefore it is primarily widespread in such areas. Due to its short growing season, it can be well grown in the northern mountains. On the Great Plain it is often grown as a secondary crop, although early autumn frosts often cause damage. Its economic importance is due to the low requirements of the species and its short growing period.

Breeding purpose: short growing period, high yield, easy husking, drought tolerance and excellent nutritional value, secure production on soils with low humus content. It is necessary to develop a complex agro-technology that is suitable for the safe and economic cultivation of the crop.
