Breeding of foxtail millet
(Setaria italica L.)
Development of the cultivation of birdseed crops is justified by domestic and international market demands, and it also provides opportunity for the utilization of the low quality production areas of the Nyírség. Foxtail millet is a crop with short growth period, which is well producible on areas with unfavourable nutriment and water supply and on plots with perished sowings.
Breeding requirements towards foxtail millet: short growing season, drought tolerance, high yield. Variety maintenance breeding helps the preservation of the favourable characteristics of our varieties.
